Asbestos is the generic name for 6 different naturally-occurring fibrous minerals. Its strength, insulation properties, ability to withstand high temperatures, and resistance to many chemicals made asbestos useful in the construction industry. Asbestos was once used widely in commercial and residential building projects.
Asbestos is a hazard to health when the fibers are disturbed and become airborne. Its fibers can be easily inhaled and carried into the lower regions of the lung where they can cause asbestosis, and increase the risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma.
